Short answer: "Open weights" does not always mean "free for client work". Of the five models below, MOSS-Image and Wan 2.2 use Apache-2.0, which allows commercial use. FLUX 3 Image Klein and LTX-2.5 use community licences with conditions, and reports describe revenue thresholds. Qwen-Image 2.1 uses a research licence. Always read the licence file in the model repository before a paid project.

Notes on each model

MOSS-Image: Apache-2.0

The MOSS-Image-SFT model card says the weights and bundled inference code use Apache-2.0. It is the clearest choice here for commercial image work, and it adds layout boxes for text placement. Read our MOSS-Image ComfyUI guide.

Wan 2.2: Apache-2.0

Alibaba's Wan 2.2 video models use Apache-2.0. We covered setup in Wan 2.2 with ComfyUI and compared the earlier version in Wan 2.1 vs Sora, Runway, Kling and Pika.

FLUX 3 Image Klein: FLUX Kommunity License

Black Forest Labs released the 5.6B Klein model with open weights on 15 October 2026. Downloads are gated: you accept the FLUX Kommunity License on Hugging Face first. Reports say that shipping Klein in a product needs a commercial tier, and one report gives a revenue threshold that we could not confirm in the licence text. ComfyUI added base and step-distilled Klein checkpoints in v0.41.0.

LTX-2.5: LTX-2.x Community License

Lightricks released the 22B LTX-2.5 audio-video model on 11 August 2026. It is open weights under the LTX-2.x Community License Agreement, not an OSI-approved open-source licence. Reports say use is free below about $10M in annual revenue, with a paid agreement above that. The licence also includes use restrictions and a watermarking and provenance clause. Access on Hugging Face is gated. If you use LTX, see our long-form LTX Video guide.

Qwen-Image 2.1: Qwen Research License

The first Qwen-Image release used Apache-2.0. Version 2.1 does not: the official repository uses the Qwen Research License Agreement. It is a strong model for transparent PNGs and editing, but check the licence before commercial use. Setup is in our Qwen-Image 2.1 Turbo guide.

Five checks before you use a model for client work

  1. Open the LICENSE file in the official repository. Do not rely on a re-upload, because unofficial copies can carry the wrong licence.
  2. Look for a revenue or user threshold.
  3. Look for use restrictions (for example, lists of banned uses that you must pass on to your clients).
  4. Look for output duties, such as watermarking or provenance labels.
  5. Save a copy of the licence with the project files and write down the date.

FAQ

Does open weights mean open source?

No. Open weights means you can download the model. Open source (for example Apache-2.0 or MIT) also gives broad rights to use, change and share it. Community licences sit between the two.

Which open image model is safest for commercial work?

Of the models in this tracker, MOSS-Image, because it uses Apache-2.0. Check the model card again before a large project.

How often is this tracker updated?

We check it when a major model is released. The CSV has a "checked on" date for each row.
